This poster describes how the University of Hawai‘i-Manoa assesses ethical reasoning skills. UHM addresses students' ethical reasoning skills through a general education learning outcome and requirement. Students discuss ethical issues and apply ethical frameworks/theories in a "contemporary ethical issues" ("E") designated course. "E" courses are offered in over 40 academic disciplines and over 1,800 students complete an "E" course each year. One goal of the requirement is to prepare students for ethical situations they may encounter in their professional lives or graduate studies. To assess how well students are meeting the ethical reasoning outcome, faculty study groups developed a rubric that can be used with assignments across the curriculum, including academic fields that have a Professional Code of Ethics. Join us to receive a copy of the rubric, see how the rubric is applied to student work, and find out what findings and recommendations emerged to improve ethical reasoning.
