In the community-based studio model, a planning/design studio works with a community to respond to a real problem. In addition to mastering course content, students learn from day-to-day, real-life experiences of local residents; the community benefits by gaining access to solutions or alternatives informed by cutting-edge knowledge available on campus. Students develop their professional capabilities, while communities promote social equity. In this presentation, we share community-based studio experiences, focusing on (i) studio processes, (ii) outcomes for students, (iii) outcomes for communities, and (iv) implications for faculty. Advantages and potential pitfalls will be discussed, along with recommendations for faculty interested in implementing the model. The session will conclude with discussion of larger-scale implications of this model for the development of a more sustainable society.
