How can a university sustain outcomes assessment? Two diametrically different universities found that taking the time to be sensitive to campus culture and engaging with campus members allowed them to identify appropriate strategies. Brandman University is a private institution with about 6,000 students and 60 full-time faculty members serving working students at 25 campuses in California and Washington. The University of Hawai‘I, Manoa, the flagship campus of the system, is an R1 with 20,000 students and 1,200 faculty. The presenters will compare and contrast the strategies their campuses employ to energize and motivate faculty involvement in assessment and use of results. Participants will interact with each other and leave with at least one strategy they can use on their own campus. Specific strategies include the following: adopt a comprehensive but manageable approach; build capacity; leverage technology (e.g., Blackboard); and create actionable knowledge.
