As humanity enters what some are calling the Anthropocene Epoch - the evolutionary age in which human activities rival the forces of nature in shaping the course of all life on the planet - we find ourselves confronted with the threat of disastrous global climate change, cascading paradigm shifts in several fields of knowledge, accelerating technological innovation, growing economic inequities, and widespread ideological conflict. In this group-participation session, attendees are invited to identify cognitive and interactive skills that the times are likely to require, and to explore the potential of higher education to facilitate their development. The discussion may include information literacy; an ethic and skill of dialogue; understanding of the basic principles of complex systems (such as global climate); ability to navigate through multiple intellectual/political/spiritual movements with understanding and tolerance; and .a feeling for the connections among -- and underlying unity of -- humanity, machines, nonhuman life, Earth, and the cosmos.
