"Baby Boomer" faculty are retiring and "Gen X" faculty are entering the academy. "Gen X" faculty seek fit with the institution over money and prestige, view the tenure process as unnecessarily secretive, value teaching and collaborative research over individual scholarship, expect better work-life balance, and are willing to leave an institution and a career if these lack value (Jaschik, 2006). Such expectations are not necessarily aligned with current practices, structures, and values in the academy. It is essential that institutions know these faculty and provide layers of support in a way that engages them, connects them to the institution, and supports their success. This poster presents findings from a longitudinal study of Gen X faculty members early in their careers. Join a conversation about what these findings mean for academe, the curriculum, and faculty development - and what actions institutions should take.
