Focusing on the engagement of students in sustainability action, we examine recent experience at USF and SJSU and share lessons learned. Case studies to be highlighted cover a range of topics: sustainable energy (from carbon footprints to energy efficiency), shifting waste to resources (recycling and composting), sustainable food (community gardens and cafeteria), and sustainability skills (from writing to analysis and management). As a result of campus efforts, we find that sustainability has been woven into the USF and SJSU curricula most clearly in the environmental majors, and is blossoming across campuses in programs ranging from science and management to media studies and literature. In addition to learning about problems, students want solutions. Overall, students want to actively support sustainability and want their universities to do the same. Our presentation will include an interactive exercise and film clip.
