This session explores sustainability in curriculum reform, starting from the premise that sustainability has less to do with expansion of the curriculum than with reconceptualizing what the curriculum should include. It may call, for example, for unlearning the lessons of economic growth and classical economics, unlearning consumerism, even unlearning lessons about disciplinary supremacy and microspecialization. In fact, colleges and universities may require organizational unlearning. Infusing sustainability across the curriculum calls for learning outcomes and assessment tools that are unprecedented in higher ed. The three presenters will examine both learning and "un-learning" outcomes, assessment methods, and co-curricular opportunities for embracing sustainability on and off campus.
