The literature indicates that the needs and characteristics of adult learners vary considerably from those of their younger counterparts, and securing funding for higher education is a growing problem. These factors, coupled with the demands of work and family, require new educational formats to engage this sector of the population and provide a way for them to earn a professional degree. The University of St Augustine for Health Sciences has implemented an innovative program to engage non-traditional students. The Flexible Doctor of Physical Therapy is a hybrid of online learning and weekend "hands-on" laboratory experiences. As a part-time program, it offers students the flexibility to continue employment and social obligations while earning their entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (DPT). We would also be happy to talk about program implementation, obstacles encountered, and student outcomes.
