What role can a university play in the larger effort to make Los Angeles a sustainable city? Antioch University Los Angeles (AULA) took on the role of educator, integrating curricula related to environmental and sustainability issues into its existing undergraduate program. The resulting interdisciplinary Urban Community and Environment (UCE) concentration, along with an Urban Sustainability Masters program (slated to launch in fall 2010), focuses on the social, economic, and political forces impacting all aspects of urban life and invites partnerships with many local grassroots organizations. By integrating urban sustainability into graduate and undergraduate curricula, we are also educating the community about sustainable practices through student-sponsored events and fostering global as well as local citizenship. Join us for a conversation about specific activities and benefits of these efforts.
