Betsy O. Barefoot, Vice President & Senior Scholar,
John N. Gardner, President, John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education,
The convergence of financial exigency and increased pressure for accountability has created a perfect storm in which student retention assumes new urgency. But the emphasis on retention may be disinviting to those who most need to be involved -- the faculty -- and may not produce a broad plan for educational excellence. This workshop will review research and lessons learned from campus practice to improve both the conventional beginning college experience and the transfer student experience; and will result in an action plan for each participant's campus. We'll also consider ways to integrate these efforts with reaffirmation of accreditation. This workshop is relevant to all institutions. Teams are encouraged.
